Overview

Established at the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, University of Rajshahi, the Photonics & Advanced Materials Laboratory (PhAM Lab) is a hub for cutting-edge research in optoelectronics and material science. While our roots trace back to the Solar Energy Laboratory founded in 2018, we officially transitioned to the PhAM Lab in November 2024 to better reflect our expanding expertise in advanced photonics and functional materials.

Dr. Jaker Hossain is currently working as a Professor to the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, University of Rajshahi, Bangladesh. He received his PhD degree from the Saitama University, Japan in 2017 under Japanese Government Scholarship. His field of research includes Photonics, Photovoltaics, Thin film Materials for solar energy, Transparent conductors, and Functional materials

Shaikh Khaled Mostaque is an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Rajshahi and an academic staff member of the PHAM lab. Previously, his M.Phil. research, conducted as one of the early researchers in this laboratory, focused on longer-wavelength light absorption in dual homo/heterojunction solar cells. He received Dean’s award-2022 for the contribution of publications during M. Phil. research. Currently, he is engaged in doctoral studies with securing MIPS scholarship at Murdoch University, Australia.

Tanzina Rahman is currently serving as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Rajshahi. She completed her M.Sc. in Applied Physics and Electronic Engineering in 2015 from the same institution.

She has been actively involved in teaching and academic activities since joining the department as a faculty member in 2020. Her research interests include photonics, photovoltaics, and thin-film materials for solar energy applications. She is passionate about contributing to renewable energy research and fostering innovation in the field of electrical and electronic engineering.

Abdul Kuddus

Masters-2016


Dr. Kuddus is currently working as a Senior Researcher at Ritsumeikan University within the Ritsumeikan Global Innovation Research Organization (R-GIRO). He completed his M. Sc. from University of Rajshahi in 2016. He specializes in advanced nanomaterials, semiconductor devices, and high-κ dielectric engineering. His research focuses on the scalable synthesis and integration of low-dimensional semiconductors and oxide materials for next-generation electronics, photonics, and energy applications.

An accomplished scholar, Dr. Abdul has authored approximately 50 peer-reviewed publications with over 2,500 citations (h-index 23). His work is featured across a nature-portfolio of high-impact journals from major publishers, including Elsevier, Wiley, AIP Publishing, ACS (American Chemical Society), and IOP Publishing. He bridges fundamental materials science with device-level innovation using cutting-edge techniques like Mist-CVD and van der Waals integration.

Beyond his research, Dr. Abdul is a key contributor to the global scientific community, managing funded projects and collaborating on sustainable technologies for harvesting energy. He serves as an editorial contributor and reviewer for major international journals and is an active member of leading scientific societies.

Md. Abdul Karim

Masters-2016

Dr. Md. Abdul Karim is an Assistant Professor of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Netrokona University, Bangladesh. He received his Ph.D. in Engineering Sciences from the University of Tsukuba, Japan in March 2023 under the prestigious MEXT scholarship. He completed his postdoctoral research at the National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS), Japan. He completed his M. Sc. Degree for the University of Rajshahi in 2016. His research interests include perovskite solar cells, thin-film semiconductors, and photovoltaic device engineering.

Bipanko Kumar Mondal

Bipanko Kumar Mondal is currently serving as a Lecturer in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur. He completed his M.Sc. Engineering in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from University of Rajshahi.

His research interests primarily focus on thin-film semiconductor materials, photovoltaic device engineering, and next-generation solar energy technologies. He is also interested in semiconductor physics, optoelectronic materials, and renewable energy systems.

Mr. Mondal is actively engaged in teaching and research in the fields of photovoltaic devices, semiconductor technology, and energy conversion systems. His long-term research goal is to contribute to the development of high-efficiency, cost-effective, and sustainable solar energy solutions for future energy applications.

Ahnaf Abir

M. Sc. 2024

Ahnaf Tahmid Abir is a PhD researcher at the University of Queensland, Australia, within the School of Mathematics and Physics. He completed his undergraduate degree in 2022 and postgraduate degree in 2024 from the University of Rajshahi. With a background in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, his research focuses on thermophotovoltaic and solar cell technologies, integrating device simulation, thin-film fabrication, and machine learning for performance prediction. His work aims to develop efficient and cost-effective energy conversion systems.

Nusrat Jahan Konok

Bachelor-2021

Nusrat Jahan Konok completed her Bachelor’s degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering at University of Rajshahi. Her undergraduate research was based on the optimization of heterojunction solar cells, conducted at the Photonics & Advanced Materials Laboratory. She was awarded the prestigious Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s Degree scholarship, fully funded by the European Union. Her Master’s program is Radiation and its Effects on Microelectronics and Photonics Technologies, offered through a consortium including University of Jyväskylä, Finland; KU Leuven (THE rank: 43) Belgium; and Jean Monnet University, France. One of the most distinguished milestones of her academic career has been the opportunity to undertake an internship at CERN. At present, she is working as a research intern at Lyon Institute of Nanotechnology (INL), an institution of French National Centre for Scientific Research. Her research activities include cleanroom nanofabrication, laser technologies, and dosimetry development. PhAM Lab has played a pivotal role in shaping her academic and research path by providing guidance, inspiration, and unwavering support.

Md. Ismail

Bachelor-2021

Md. Ismail completed his Bachelor’s degree in the EEE Department at University of Rajshahi in 2021. During his undergraduate studies, he conducted his thesis research at the Photonics & Advanced Materials Laboratory, where he worked on thermophotovoltaic materials and related research topics. Currently, he is pursuing a joint Master’s degree in Nanoscale Engineering offered by Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1, INSA Lyon, and École Centrale de Lyon in France. His current research interests focus on wide bandgap semiconductor materials, nanoscale devices, and next-generation electronic applications. He is highly motivated to continue his research career in advanced semiconductor materials and nanoelectronics.

Aditya Bhowmik

Bachelor-2022

Aditya Bhowmik is a Ph.D. student and Graduate Research Assistant (GRA) at the QTM Lab in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Florida International University. He received his B.Sc. in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the University of Rajshahi. His research interests primarily focus on computational electrodynamics and photonics. He is particularly interested in photonic device modeling, complex frequency analysis, and quantum computing frameworks. Prior to beginning his doctoral studies, his work primarily focused on solar cell modeling and performance enhancement. His long-term research goal is to design and model next-generation photonic devices capable of sustaining peak performance in harsh environments, ensuring they can withstand extreme mechanical, thermal, and radiation stresses.

Bipin Saha

Bachelor-2022

Bipin Saha is a Ph.D. student and Graduate Research Assistant (GRA) at ACCESS Lab in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at North Carolina A&T State University. He received his B.Sc. in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from University of Rajshahi in 2022. His research interests primarily focus on autonomous systems, computer vision, and visual navigation. He is particularly interested in perception systems, multimodal learning, and intelligent transportation technologies.

Prior to beginning his doctoral studies, he worked on several research and development projects involving computer vision, generative AI, robotics, and deep learning applications. In addition, his previous research includes the design and simulation of high-efficiency CuSbSe₂-based dual-heterojunction solar cells with copper gallium selenide (CGS) back surface field optimization, focusing on reducing interface recombination losses and improving power conversion efficiency through advanced device engineering techniques.

Mr. Saha is actively engaged in research related to autonomous mobility, intelligent perception, and next-generation AI systems for transportation. His long-term research goal is to contribute to the development of reliable, efficient, and safe autonomous navigation technologies for future intelligent transportation systems while also exploring sustainable and energy-efficient technological solutions.

Mehedi Hasan Tonmoy

B. Sc. 2022

Mehedi Hasan Tonmoy is currently pursuing a Master of Professional Engineering in Emerging Power Systems at Curtin University, Australia. He completed his B.Sc. Engineering in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the University of Rajshahi in 2022. His research interests primarily focus on photovoltaics, photonics, metamaterials, wave propagation, and renewable energy systems. His undergraduate thesis was on the design and optimization of a high-efficiency CdTe–FeSi2 based double-junction tandem solar cell. After completing his bachelor’s degree, he continued his research work in the lab and contributed as the second author to a publication on THz metamaterial absorbers for 6G applications. His long-term research goal is to contribute to the development of efficient, cost-effective, and sustainable energy technologies.

Photovoltaics (PVs) and Thermophovoltaics (TPVs)

This field of research mainly focuses on the design and development of photovoltaic (PV) cells based on silicon, perovskites, chalcogenides, other novel compounds.

This field of research also focuses on holistic design and development of novel narrow-bandgap compounds for the application in thermophotovoltaic (TPV) cells.

This field of research mainly focuses on the design and development of PICs components that  include:

  • Optical waveguides
  • Resonators
  • Modulators
  • Photonic sensors
  • MEMS-assisted photonic devices
  • Integrated photonics for communication and sensing
  • Metamaterilas and THz photonics that includes: THz metamaterial absorbers, Photonic structures for 6G applications, Electromagnetic wave manipulation, Advanced optical materials

This research area deals with finding novel solar absorbing materials and fabrications of thin film solar cells with those materials by simple solution-process. This field currently focusing on solution-processed chalcogenide solar cells, developing SnS solar absorber, transparent conductive oxides (TCO), etc.

This research area deals with fabrication of functional materials for the applications in Nano Eletronics, PEC etc.

This area of research focuses on Plasma-processing of functional materials to improve cleaning, wettability, adhesion, and biocompatibility. These methods includ plasma etching, film deposition, and surface activation that improves printability, coating, and bonding for automotive, medical, and electronic applications.
